Understanding the Business of Show

July 10, 2023

It’s #MakeItHappenMonday at The Performer’s Manifesto – we’re here to help you set yourself up for a proactive and productive week ahead, and today, we’re diving into the world of show BUSINESS!

As an artist entering the professional industry, one of the harshest realities to face is that show business is, quite literally, the “business of show”! It’s something you may have never given much thought to as a performer, but the truth is, if you’re in show business, you’re in business. Period.

Just like any other industry, the primary goal of a business is to generate profit or income. And as a professional performer, your artistry is also your profession – it’s how you make a living.

Now, I know this might ruffle some feathers and go against the grain for those artists who simply want to focus on their creativity. And hey, if that’s what you truly want, that’s great. But if you want to pursue this as a profession, it’s crucial to understand that it involves navigating the business side of things too.

Your profession, whether you like it or not, encompasses various aspects of the business, such as your promotional materials (headshots and CVs), marketing (website and social media), networking, financial management, industry knowledge, contracts, career planning, producing your own work, and more.

While agents and managers can assist and advise you on some of these matters, it’s important to realize that the more you know about the business, especially the business of show, the more control you have over the direction of your career. No agent or manager will ever be as invested in your career as you are!

Now, I understand that for most creative types (myself included when I first started), all this talk of business can be overwhelming, confusing, or even a little daunting. But here’s the good news: all the knowledge, skills, and strategies required to build a professional career in the business can be learned and implemented by you. This puts you firmly in control of your own career trajectory.

So, on this #MakeItHappenMonday, let’s dive headfirst into the world of show business with enthusiasm and determination. Embrace the fact that you’re not only an artist but also an entrepreneur.

Here’s your chance to take action! This week, choose one aspect of the business side of your career that you’ve been neglecting or feel unsure about, and commit to learning more about it. It could be creating a professional website, researching industry trends, or understanding contract terms. Take small steps to educate yourself and take control of your career. And remember, we’re always here to help you along the way.

Remember, every successful performer is also a savvy businessperson. Let’s make it happen! ?? #PerformersManifesto #MakeItHappenMonday
