Start With the End in Mind!

May 6, 2024

Today, we’re going to dive into a powerful approach that has been a game-changer for many successful individuals across various fields. This strategy isn’t just for the likes of Oprah Winfrey or Madonna; it’s for every performer who dreams of a thriving career in the arts. It’s about starting with your ultimate goal in mind and working backward to make it a reality. Let’s explore a transformative formula that can lead you to your version of success, known as Be > Do > Have.

Much like engineers who deconstruct a finished product to understand its creation process, we’ll apply this method to our career goals in the performing arts. By starting with the end goal in mind and working backward, we can create a clear and strategic path to achieve our dreams.

Step 1: HAVE

What is it that you really want? This is where your journey begins—not with what you need to do first, but with understanding your end goal. Maybe it’s to star in a Broadway show, release a hit album, or choreograph for major music videos. Whatever it is, identify it clearly. This clarity will be the beacon guiding all your actions.

Step 2: DO

Now that you know what you want to have, what do you need to do to get there? This step involves mapping out the concrete actions required to reach your end goal. Break it down into manageable steps. If your goal is to be a film actor, for instance, your steps might include taking acting classes, going to auditions, networking with industry professionals, and perhaps even moving to a film hub like Los Angeles or London.

Step 3: BE

This might be the most profound step of all. Decide who you need to be to do the things that will get you what you desire. This step is about cultivating the mindset, discipline, and identity that align with your goals. It’s about becoming the person who belongs on that stage or set. Do you need to be more disciplined? More creative? More networked? This is about internal growth and aligning your mindset with your aspirations.

Embrace the Journey

The Be > Do > Have formula isn’t just a checklist; it’s a mindset that encourages us to focus on our ultimate goals and work backwards from there. By knowing what you want to have, understanding what you need to do, and becoming who you need to be, you set a foundation for success that is robust, actionable, and deeply motivating.

Ready to start? This week, take a moment to:

  1. Define Your Goal: Write down exactly what you want to ‘Have’.
  2. Plan Your Actions: List the steps you’ll take to ‘Do’ what’s necessary.
  3. Foster Your Growth: Reflect on who you need to ‘Be’ to achieve your goals.

Let’s make this week count by setting the stage for a future where you are not just surviving, but thriving in your artistry.

Rock on, and let’s make those dreams happen!
