Simplify Your Day: A 3-Step To-Do List Method for Performers

November 25, 2024

We’ve all had those days when our to-do list feels like a never-ending script with too many characters and no clear direction. This #MakeItHappenMonday, let’s rewrite that story with a simple strategy to kickstart your week with clarity and focus. Say goodbye to overwhelm and hello to a productive, stress-free week!

The Performer’s 3-Step To-Do List Method

Here’s how you can transform your chaotic list into a clear plan of action:

Step 1: The Brain Dump – Clear the Stage

Start by writing down everything on your mind. Think of this as a mental warm-up – clearing the clutter so you can focus on what really matters.

  • Include everything you need to do: rehearsals, auditions, errands, emails, fitness goals, meal prep—if it’s taking up brain space, put it on the list.
  • Don’t worry about organising yet; the goal here is to declutter your mind so you’re not juggling tasks in your head.

Why This Works:
Getting everything down on paper (or into your favourite app) gives you a sense of control. Like setting up your props before a performance – you’re prepared, and nothing gets left behind!

Step 2: The Top 3 Method – Focus on What Matters

With your list complete, it’s time to narrow your focus. Ask yourself these three simple questions:

  1. Is it urgent? (Does it need to be done today or tomorrow?)
  2. Is it important for my long-term goals? (Will it help you grow, land a gig, or stay on track?)
  3. Will it bring me peace of mind? (Will getting it done make the rest of the day easier?)

From there, pick just three tasks to focus on for the day. These are your priorities—the tasks that will have the biggest impact today.

Example Daily Top 3:

  • Submit an audition tape before the deadline.
  • Practise choreography for tomorrow’s rehearsal.
  • Meal prep for the next three days to stay energised.

Why This Works:
By narrowing your focus to three tasks, you eliminate overwhelm and ensure you’re making meaningful progress. Each action has a clear purpose, helping you stay on track.

Step 3: Keep It Manageable

Once your top 3 tasks are complete, treat the rest of your list as optional.

  • If you have time and energy, tackle a few more tasks from your list.
  • If you’re done for the day, give yourself permission to rest, knowing you’ve accomplished what’s most important.

Why This Works:
Performers thrive on momentum. Completing your top 3 gives you a sense of achievement, setting a positive tone for the rest of your day (or week). Plus, it keeps you from burning out by trying to “do it all.”

Why This Method Works for Performers

Performers face unique challenges—unpredictable schedules, multiple priorities, and the pressure to balance work and creativity. This method works because it:

  1. Provides Clarity: You know exactly what to focus on each day.
  2. Reduces Overwhelm: A smaller, focused list feels more manageable.
  3. Builds Momentum: Completing key tasks fuels your motivation.
  4. Balances Priorities: You’re addressing urgent needs while investing in long-term goals.
