Prioritising Performers’ Mental Health

October 9, 2023

Happy #MakeItHappenMonday!

Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day, and we’re dedicating this entire week to the well-being of our shining stars – yes, that means you!

You know as well as anyone that being a performer isn’t just about the glamour and the applause. It’s a profound commitment involving your mind, body, and soul. Stella Adler put it perfectly: no other profession demands so much from these three elements. We pour our hearts and souls out on stage, under bright lights, all while being critiqued and judged. Phew! That’s a lot, right?

That’s exactly why mental health should be front and center in your life. Your emotional well-being is like the backstage crew for your performances, making sure everything runs smoothly.

Here’s how you can #MakeItHappen this week for your mental health:

1️⃣ Dial Up a Heart-to-Heart
Take a few minutes to call a family member or friend who ‘gets’ you. It’s therapeutic—trust us! Share a joke, vent a little, or simply listen; sometimes, that’s all you need to lift the curtain on a brighter mood.

2️⃣ Time-Out for Self-Check
Today, why not take a break for some self-reflection? Light some candles, put on some chill music, and meditate. Listen to your inner monologue. Remember, self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s the foundation for your life of performance.

3️⃣ The Gratitude Journal
Write down three things you’re thankful for today. It could be anything—a successful audition, a loving pet, or even the sunrise that greeted you this morning. Gratitude is your personal spotlight, highlighting the good parts of your life.

4️⃣ Reach Out and Touch (Virtually)
Slide into the DMs of someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. Artists are part of a greater community, and that simple “Hey, how’ve you been?” can be a duo performance of uplifting spirits.

Your CTAs for this #MakeItHappenMonday:

  • Dial a friend or family member for that heart-to-heart.
  • Schedule at least 10 minutes for self-reflection. Put it in your calendar now!
  • Start that gratitude journal. Even a Post-it note will do!
  • Message an old friend or fellow artist. Keep that community strong!

Let’s make our emotional well-being the star of the show this week! You’re not alone on this stage called life, and taking care of your mental health is the ultimate training for long-term happiness and success.

Let’s break a leg, but keep our spirits high!
