Flip the Script for a Better Performance… (in Life and On Stage!)

October 18, 2023

It’s #WellnessWednesday, and we have a wellness challenge that’s not just good for your health but great for your career too! It’s all about your mental script—the internal dialogue that plays out in your head each day. The challenge is simple yet profound: “When a negative thought enters your mind, think three positive ones. Train yourself to ‘Flip the Script!'”

Why Is This Important?

We all know the power of thoughts, don’t we? Thoughts have the ability to shape our emotions, which in turn impact our actions. As performing artists, you’re all about emotion and expression, so why not make them as uplifting as possible? Remember, your thoughts can either be your backstage crew, helping you shine, or that critic in the front row, eager to bring you down.

The Science Behind the Technique

Negative thinking can create a loop that’s hard to break. Cognitive behavioural experts tell us that our minds are more likely to focus on the negative due to a phenomenon known as “negativity bias.” However, with consistent effort, we can rewire our neural pathways to create a more positive outlook. This doesn’t just help in dealing with the stresses of life but also prepares you for auditions, performances, and the emotional roller-coaster that comes with a career in performing arts.

How to “Flip the Script”

  1. Awareness: The first step is recognizing that you’re having a negative thought. For example, you might think, “I messed up that audition; I’m terrible.”
  2. Pause and Breathe: Before spiralling further into negativity, take a deep breath. This momentary pause helps you detach from the thought.
  3. Counteract with Positivity: Now, bring in three positive affirmations or memories to flip that script. For instance:
    • “I’ve had great auditions before; this was just an off day.”
    • “I am a skilled and passionate artist.”
    • “Every experience is a stepping stone to my next great performance.”

Repeat this cycle whenever you catch yourself in a negative thought loop.

It won’t happen overnight, but remember: excellence over perfection!

A Daily Habit for Long-term Success

Turning this into a habit is key. Keep a journal or use a habit-tracking app to mark your progress. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small. Soon, you’ll find that you’re not only happier but also more mentally prepared for the challenges and opportunities that come your way.

Remember, as performing artists, you already know how to bring scripts to life. Now, it’s time to bring that skill to your mental script. And who knows? This could be your ticket from being a striving artist to a thriving artist… and beyond!

Shine on, and remember – your thoughts have the power to change your life and your performance.
